Simple Manifesto #40 – Declutter before organizing
This is part of our series on The Simple Living Manifesto. We invite you to join us on the journey.
The 40th idea in the manifesto is:
Declutter before organizing. Many people make the mistake of taking a cluttered desk or filing cabinet or closet or drawer, and trying to organize it. Unfortunately, that’s not only hard to do, it keeps things complicated. Simplify the process by getting rid of as much of the junk as possible, and then organizing. If you declutter enough, you won’t need to organize at all.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned while trying to pack for our move — it’s the less you have — the less you have to pack and the less you have to move.
Each room we’re going through, each closet, each drawer, we’re finding things we had forgotten about or haven’t used in months.
So we’re getting rid of it. Piece by piece. Box by box.
Cutting down on our stuff before we’re forced to move it.
It’s not that we have tons of stuff — but we definitely have more than others and more than we need or even use.
The same goes for everything else in our lives.
When we do with less — and declutter — it lessens the burden later.
Whether that means less to move across town, less to organize, or less to maintain — the burden is lessoned for the future.
So rather than organizing, re-organizing and re-organizing again — try decluttering and purging first — and save yourself time and stress in the future.
