Simple Manifesto #55 – The Art of Doing Nothing
This is part of our series on Leo Babauta’s Simple Living Manifesto. We invite you to join us on the journey.
The 55th idea in the manifesto is:
Learn to do nothing. Doing nothing can be an art form, and it should be a part of every life. Read the Art of Doing Nothing.
Ahhh… picture it… doing absolutely… NOTHING.
Of all the vacations I’ve been on, some of the best times have been simply leaving the watches, electronics and more behind and just sitting and doing nothing.
It’s part of what makes vacations great — especially the cruises we’ve been on.
But you can carry that great feeling with you beyond the vacation as well — think about it as a “staycation.”
Whether its 15-minutes during the work day, an hour in the evening or a full day during your weekend.
As Leo suggests, start simple.
Take a 15-minute break during your work day, leave your desk, computer, phone and everything else behind and find a place to sit and enjoy the moment.
Whether it’s in a quiet spot in the office, outside, or back in your car — sit quietly and enjoy the silence.
Breath slowly, deeply. Picture yourself in your favorite place and relax.
Once you conquer 15-minutes, try taking a longer break during lunch, or an hour or so in the evening.
Find a great chair or hammock and enjoy the moment — either by yourself or with a spouse or kids nearby.
And of course you can extend your “staycation” to a full day, or even a full weekend (just be sure those around you are on board with this as well).
What about you? How do you practice doing nothing? Do you have some great pointers for the rest of us?
