Simple Manifesto #39 – Exercise

simplemanifesto

This is part of our series on The Simple Living Manifesto. We invite you to join us on the journey.

The 38th idea in the manifesto is:

Exercise. This goes along the same lines as eating healthy, as it simplifies your life in the long run, but it goes even further: exercise helps burn off stress and makes you feel better. It’s great. Here’s how to create the exercise habit.

Exercise = yuck!

Right?

Well before you begin at least.

I’ve always found that getting to the gym, or getting moving is always the hardest part of exercising for me.

Once I’m there and going, it’s easy to keep moving and end up with a great feeling of accomplishment when I’m done.

It’s just getting that initial motivation that’s rough.

My Life and I had a gym membership last year at a high end (read:expensive) gym in the Dallas area. We got a great deal through her work and enjoyed going right after work.

It was a lot easier because it was within a block of her office so we made certain we went to the gym before heading home and getting distracted with other things.

However, after our summer vacation, life happened and that was the end of our regular workout regime. As the year came to an end, we cancelled our membership simply because it wasn’t being used.

And now it’s finding that initial motivation again to get moving.

Got any ideas? What’s your motivation?

I am motivated by fun. If something I am doing isn’t fun, I won’t do it. Dancing is high on my list! There is a dance-type-exercise thing for women called Dance Dance Party Party (google it!), and it looked like fun, so I’ve started one in my town.

I am also motivated by my environmental concerns, so I’d rather walk than drive if possible. Walking is a great way to remember I live on this earth, and not just in a box! I walked to work ALL winter, even at -40!

I used to work at Curves, but now that I’ve quit, I don’t want to get sloppy, so I guess I’m also motivated by vanity. I’m using my WiiFit most mornings, and that seems to be keeping me on top of things for now.

    • We’ve talked about getting a WiiFit. We just don’t want it to end up sitting and collecting dust like our other 2 game systems have — so we haven’t taken that plunge.

I’m hoping to get back on my bike more once we move. I have a friend nearby that wants to ride more so hopefully we’ll be able to.

Laurie and I were doing great last year until her doctor told her she was overdoing it and she needed to slow down :-(

I’ve been trying to run regularly for the past few months. I got a Nike+ sensor to work with my iPod and record my runs. Seeing the progression has been great. You can set challenges and follow training programmes if you want to.

The downside is that I now seem to have an over use injury! And it hurts! Lots.

    • DOH! Yeah I’ve been trying to find a new app or something for my Blackberry to use with bike riding or walking. I think I may have found one, but each night I plan on using it something else has come up. DOH!!!!
I’ll let you know how it works (not that you use a Blackberry ;-) .
There are definitely some cool sports apps for Android that are making me really lean towards an Android phone when I’m ready to upgrade.
