Simple Manifesto #38 – Eat healthy

simplemanifesto

This is part of our series on The Simple Living Manifesto. We invite you to join us on the journey.

The 38th idea in the manifesto is:

Eat healthy. It might not be obvious how eating healthy relates to simplicity, but think about the opposite: if you eat fatty, greasy, salty, sugary, fried foods all the time, you are sure to have higher medical needs over the long term. We could be talking years from now, but imagine frequent doctor visits, hospitalization, going to the pharmacist, getting therapy, having surgery, taking insulin shots … you get the idea. Being unhealthy is complicated. Eating healthy simplifies all of that greatly, over the long term. Read about how to simplify your eating habits.

OK — confession time. As I write this I’m really dreaming about eating at Outback tonight for mine and Laurie’s three year anniversary.

I’m sure there will be red meat, a large baked potato, fried onion and a decent sized beer.

It’s become an annual tradition/treat after we enjoyed Outback the night of our wedding.

And in all reality there’s probably nothing inherently wrong with a meal like that (well maybe the ginormous fried onion) but it’s the continual eating of foods like this, in portion sizes that could feed a family of four in some counties, that has turned America into the unhealthy, obese state that we’re in.

And I’m not trying to elbow my neighbor here — I’m pointing the fingers right back at me.

I’m just as guilty as the next guy.

But if I’m really going to simplify my life, I’m have to work this into all areas of my life — including what’s on my plate.

To that end, I believe the best advice I’ve heard on eating healthy is simple…

Eat food.

Of course we’re all saying, “Well I eat food all the time. It’s not like I sit down and chew on my couch cushion.”

But then again, when you consider what goes into some of our foods — the couch cushion might not look so bad.

If your grandmother wouldn’t recognize it as food — it’s probably not food.

If you don’t recognize the ingredients on the label — it’s probably not food.

So eat simple foods full of nutrition — and eat in proper portions as well.

And hopefully with enough encouragement, we can all make shifts in our thinking and actions and turn our obesity epidemic around.

Who’s with me?
