Simple Manifesto #31 – Learn to live frugally

simplemanifesto

This is part of our series on The Simple Living Manifesto. We invite you to join us on the journey.

The 31st idea in the manifesto is:

Learn to live frugally. Living frugally means buying less, wanting less, and leaving less of a footprint on the earth. It’s directly related to simplicity. Here are 50 tips on how to live frugally.

Why live frugally? First, because it allows you to spend less than you earn, and use the difference to pay off debt, save or invest. Or all three. Second, because the less you spend, the less you need to earn. And that means you can choose to work less, or work more but retire early. Or take mini retirements. You have more options with a frugal lifestyle. – Leo Babauta

While I would love to call myself frugal — I don’t think I’m there yet.

In fact, I just asked My Life and she said “sometimes.”

When it comes to being frugal I really have to remind myself to start small.

I can put off buying a new TV, or computer or truck for months upon months — but it’s those little purchases that really sneak up on you at the end of the month.

I have to remember to ask myself…

  • Do I really need that soda?
  • Do I really need that candy bar?
  • Do I really need that new book?
  • Do I really need to see that movie in the theater?
  • Do I really need to make that extra trip to the store or can I wait till later
  • Will this help me obtain my goals?
  • Will this be a true long-term benefit to myself or others?

There are always cheaper alternatives but having the mindset to look for them (or simply avoid the cost all together) takes will power and frugality.

I don’t believe it’s something people are naturally born with — but with a bit of practice and encouragement, it’s a practice we can all learn and conquer.
