Five questions with Adam Baker
1. What does living simply mean to you?
Living simply for me means cutting all the excess clutter, both physical and mental, so that you become really conscious of how you choose to spend your time. Conscious of your finances… conscious during your time spent with family/friends… and conscious of the true value of your possessions.
2. Why is it important to you?
Life just seems more powerful when I live it consciously. Without all the distraction and clutter, I feel better and my experiences are generally richer.
3. What steps have you taken to live simply in your day to day life?
A little over a year ago, my wife and I sold our business and all of our possessions (except what we could fit into backpacks) to travel the world. It was a drastic step for us, but one that was eye-opening!
We’ve also simplified a lot of our financial life by eliminating credit cards, paying down debt, and focusing our priorities.
4. What’s been the hardest part of your simple journey?
Getting over the attachment we had to our “stuff”. As young as we were, we had still acquire a bunch of possessions. Some we thought we “needed”, others we thought were “sentimental”. As it turns out, almost everything was *extra*. We needed and/or wanted very little of it when it really came down to it!
5. What advice would you give others who are on the living simple journey?
Just start the process. Raise your awareness. Make a list of your possessions. Keep track of how you spend your time during the day. List out all your debts. Take a step today that will help you become more conscious!
